I love everything that Apple has been doing with their macOS Sierra. Features that you will only see on an iOS device get brought over to the Mac. If you upgraded to the newest macOS version, you will get a chance to use Siri, a smart assistant that Apple introduced back in iOS 5.
Another great feature that recently got brought over to the Mac is called Night Shift.
The 'classic' Mac OS is the original Macintosh operating system that was introduced in 1984 alongside the first Macintosh and remained in primary use on Macs until the introduction of Mac OS X in 2001. Apple released the original Macintosh on January 24, 1984; its early system software was partially based on the Lisa OS and the Xerox PARC Alto computer, which former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. This means you will need a late 2015 iMac 27-inch or newer, 2016 MacBook Pro or newer, 2018 Mac Mini, 2019 Mac Pro, 2018 MacBook Air, or an early 2016 MacBook or newer model computer.
In iOS 9.3, Apple released this feature to their iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad so that users could be able to rest easy even if they stay up late texting or using any functionality of their iOS device. I know a lot of people who like to go to sleep right after they put down their laptop and so it’s great to have Night Shift on your Mac computer.
Currently, the Night Shift mode is only available to developers who upgraded to macOS 10.12.4 Beta. If you managed to get the update early, here’s how to turn the feature on.
Enable Night Shift Mode on Mac in macOS
- Open the System Preferences app
- Go to Display and click on Night Shift
- To turn Night Shift on, click on the drop down menu next to Schedule
- Select Custom or Sunrise to Sunset
The good thing about activating the Night Shift mode is that it gives users flexibility as to how they want it to be enabled. When you choose Custom, it will let you pick a beginning time (From) to end time (To). Between those selected time, Night Shift will activate on your Mac.
If you choose Sunrise to Sunset, macOS will automatically adapt to your time zone (based on location) and turn on Night Shift. Furthermore, when this feature is turned on, you will be able to adjust the color temperature using a slider.
Disable Night Shift Mode in macOS
Turning the Night Shift feature off is as easy as turning it on. All you have to do is go back to your System Preferences > Click on Display > and select Off. An alternative way of doing it would be using the slider next to Color Temperature and slide it all the way to the left (Less Warm). Once it hit the end, you should see the standard color coming back up.

Night Shift Mode vs. F.lux?
I always prefer having less additional apps on my laptop. With that being said, if there is a feature that becomes built-in then I would get rid of the third-party app that provides that same functionality. In this case, removing f.lux and use Night Shift instead.
After all, they both works very similarly so why not leave that storage for something else.
One of the most appreciable iOS features “Night Shift” is now available on Mac starting with macOS Sierra 10.12.4. Once enabled, it transfers the colors of the display to the warmer end of the color spectrum. As a result, your eyes won’t burn or strain.
The obvious advantage of using Night Shift on Mac is that you will have a better night’s sleep. Depending on your need, you can either set it to get activated automatically or set a custom schedule. Let’s find out how it works!
